open days

By theunipod,

A university open day is your chance to find out if a uni is the right one for you. Remember, this is the next three, four, possibly five years of your life we’re talking about here. You don’t want to end up in the wrong place! But, if you follow theunipod’s advice on how to make the most of you college or university open day, you should be able to get all the info you need to find the right one!

Mark the date
It’s just as important as your best mate’s birthday – make sure you mark the date of those uni open days you want to go to in your diary and start planning how to get there. Our open days’ calendar has all your dates and you can add them straight to your calendar.

Sign up early
Putting the date of those uni and college open days in your diary is the first step. But that’s not enough to get you there. You still need to sign up and register your attendance. Do this early, particularly if your school is organising transport on the day. You don’t want to miss out on your seat.

Do your homework
As the date rolls around for those open days you’ve signed up to, it’s important you spend time checking out the university online. Don’t turn up on the day thinking you’ll be able to find out about everything that uni has to offer. Unis are big places and there is always heaps going on – especially on open days, so it can be a little overwhelming. However, if you suss out exactly what it is you want to find out and do a bit of research so you know what to expect, then when you get there, you’ll have a much better experience.

Get the highlighters out
As part of your homework, download the day’s schedule from their website. This will have a list of everything that’s happening on the day from entertainment to tours of the campus, presentations by staff and even mini lectures by the professors themselves. This is a great way to really get an insight into university and campus life. However, numbers could be limited so you’ll want to get to these events early. By going through the schedule and picking out which ones you really want to attend, this will help to ensure you don’t miss out!

Ask the right questions
The world of university is very different to that of school, so you’re bound to have a few questions you want to ask. Well, at an open day, you’re surrounded by people who’ll know the answers to your questions, whether it’s about the student services or what subjects you can study. Perhaps you want to know if they have a ski club or events throughout the year you can enjoy. If you want to know something, don’t be shy – just ask. That’s what the day is all about – enabling you to find out more and getting the answers to your questions, so you can make an informed choice about which university to go to. And to make sure you don’t forget something, theunipod has put together a list of questions to ask at an open day. Print it out or send it to your phone, and get asking!

Have fun
Open days are lots of fun. There’s always so much happening it’s like a festival on campus. So although there’s the serious side of finding out what subjects and degrees are on offer and what student services are available to you, there’s also the fun side of soaking up the atmosphere, so enjoy it!
