Student Nights in Birmingham
By Yashi Banymadhub,
When it comes to student nightlife, there is no doubt that Birmingham has a lot to offer. Students from the University of Birmingham, Birmingham City University and Aston University enjoy a variety of student events, from cheap club nights to the more upmarket ones to live music shows.
Stupid Tuesdays @ Bliss
Located on Broad Street, where most of the Birmingham nightlife takes place, The Bliss bar and clubrooms are always jam-packed with students on a Tuesday night for the best value student event. Whether you want to sit in the bar upstairs, pose for a photo with the Stig or if you are feeling a little wild, take a ride on the mechanical bull, there is something for everyone. With most drinks costing only £1, Stupid Tuesdays is definitely a favourite amongst Freshers.
Cheap £1 drinks and a retro atmosphere make for a great night at the alternative club, Snobs. Popular amongst rock lovers and generally crowded beyond the occupancy limit (if there is one) on a Wednesday, Snobs has a very cheerful feel with a hint of nostalgia invoked by indie songs and the occasional 90’s tunes that we all listened to while growing up- a great place to reminisce about the ‘old’ days. Watch out for the mosh pits!
Usually the first club visited by a Fresher, Gatecrasher has a posher feel than most of the other Brummie nightclubs. With 9 bars and 4 different rooms hosting different genres of music, from alternative to dubstep, the club has a somewhat maze-like feel. Gatecrasher even sees some of the biggest DJs like Will.i.am. The main dance floor has a dream-like atmosphere, almost as if you were dancing on clouds, thanks to the fog machines.
Vodbull @ Bar Risa
Located on Broad Street, this stylish and trendy bar is one of the largest in Birmingham and hosts a range of events, from comedy nights to student nights. Vodbull is one of the longest running student events that takes place at Bar Risa every Thursday. This night is a popular one amongst University of Birmingham and Aston University students due to its ideal location and close proximity to both universities. The club offers a variety of types of music depending on your taste, from cheesy pop to R&B. There is even a karaoke bar where you can show off your melodious voice.
Minted @ Mechu
With a very smart dress code, a night out at Mechu is a chance to dress up and feel glamorous. One of the most expensive nights out but nonetheless experienced at least once by students. The interior décor of this luxurious and exclusive club is described as ‘Mary Quant deluxe with a dash of Paco Rabanne’. Mechu offers a selection of fine wines and cocktails and although they are a little pricey, you might just be able to afford it with your friends if you all chip in!
Cocktail @ The Jam House
Situated in St Paul’s Square, The Jam House is an ideal place for live entertainment, presenting some of the best local bands as well as top performers such as Jools Holland, The Stylistics and Ocean Colour Scene. 2-4-1 on selected cocktails every Thursday night.
Fab ‘n’ Fresh
Exclusively for University of Birmingham students, ‘Fab’ at Joe’s Bar, which is located at the Guild of students, is the place to be on a Saturday night. Offering drinks at competitively low prices and a silent disco on the top floor. No need to pay for a cab as you can walk home. Students consider this great night a bargain!
SICK @ B4 Bar
Aston University’s Friday night event runs from 8pm in B4 Bar. Entry is £4 for students and £5 for non-students. Expect competitions with great prizes and drink offers with spirits and mixers for just £1.50.
